Spring pins come in a variety of different configurations and materials from mechanical drive components’ specialist, Ondrives Ltd. of Chesterfield.
Coiled spring pins are an economical and popular product that are available in either carbon steel to ISO 8750 or 302 nickel stainless steel to ISO 8750 as standard. Sizes start at 1.5mm to 12mm nominal diameter and lengths of 5mm up to 100mm for the carbon steel version. Nickel stainless coiled pins start at just 0.8mm diameter going up to 12mm, and lengths from 4mm to 100mm are available as standard. They have a uniform strength and flexibility that absorb shock and vibration, and closer diameter tolerances afford equal stress distribution.
Slotted spring pins consist of a single coil of spring steel (or stainless steel) with an open slot sufficiently wide to enable the pin to reduce in diameter as it is driven into a hole of appropriate size. The ends of the pin have a bevelled chamfer. They are designed for plain drilled holes but a countersink makes assembly easier. Slotted pins are normally supplied in heavy duty form to ISO 8752, but a light duty version can be supplied to ISO 13337. It is possible to increase the shear strength of slotted pins by inserting a small diameter pin inside a large one and this should always be done by inserting the larger pin first, then the smaller one, taking care that the slot is between 90º and 180º away from the slot in the larger pin. Carbon steel slotted pins are available as standard in sizes from 1.5mm to 12mm diameter and lengths of 4mm up to 100mm whilst stainless steel are available with diameters from 1.5mm to 10mm and lengths of 5mm to 50mm.
