There are seven different types of rod ends available from mechanical drive components specialist, Ondrives Ltd.

The first is Uniflon® female rod ends which are self-lubricating, tight fitting and have minimum clearance on the ball. They are available in both stainless and steel as standard and a wide range is offered with sizes from 6.00mm ball diameter up to 31.75mm and threads from M3 to M18. On the stainless models only, the liner of Uniflon®E is between the ball and the race. It is most suitable for use in corrosive environments such as those applications with water, salt and humidity. It is also suitable for those where the rod ends will be exposed to atmospheric conditions or oxidising environments without the need for maintenance. These are also available in a male version.

The next two in the range are the same except for the inserts used inside them. They are free moving female and male rod ends with a high ball clearance and have self lubricating inserts – the CFF (female)/CMM (male) type is bronze, and the CFF-SS (female)/CMM-SS (male) type is stainless steel. They are maintenance free, have wear resistant bearing surfaces and a low constant rotational resistance. Bore sizes start at 3mm going up to 35mm and radial backlash starts from 5µm up to 112µm.

Igubal® rod ends complete the range and are made of low friction plastics and polymers. There are many advantages to these plastic rod ends, some of which are; maintenance free and self-lubricating, high strength under impact loads, very high tensile strength for varying loads, compensation for alignment errors, compensation for edge loads and resistance to dirt, dust and lint. They are lightweight with approximately 20% the weight of steel and offer corrosion resistance to weak alkalis/acids as well as to fuels and lubricants.
