NEW PRODUCT INFORMATION
Issued: July 2004

Ondrives Ltd of Chesterfield are developing a new, compact all bearing tapered gear unit which works in a similar way to a standard spur design gearbox, the company states.
As it has teeth cut at a small taper of just 3 degrees, this allows the use of linear movement between the gear teeth to control the backlash. A prototype has been built giving an output backlash of 6 arc minutes which has enabled the company to consider production units.

A machinable adaptor plate and coupling will permit motor connection if required, or shaft to shaft connection if not. Ratios are available from 2:1 to 16:1 as standard. Gear cutting technology has been specially adapted for Ondrives which has allowed them to cut the taper gears using the latest modern control systems.
Ideal for positioning and other precision environments, amongst others. They should be available shortly with gear teeth in nitrided steel as standard for wear resistance and a unique aluminium body ready for use, with a low backlash figure of approx 8 arc minutes at the output side.
Once the development has been fine tuned, this should allow the company to bring to the market a useful and alternative low-cost unit compared to conventional servo design gearheads.
